Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound egg noodles
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 4 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the egg noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain well and return to the pot.
  3. Add the melted butter to the noodles and toss to coat.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, sour cream, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients over the buttered noodles and stir gently to combine.
  6. Arrange the sliced apples evenly over the noodle mixture in the baking dish.
  7. Pour the noodle and apple mixture over the apples, ensuring they are mostly covered.
  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the kugel is set and golden brown on top.
  9. Let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use a mix of apples like Granny Smith for tartness and Honeycrisp for sweetness.
  • If you prefer a less sweet kugel, reduce the sugar slightly.
  • This kugel can be made a day ahead and reheated before serving.
