Ingredients
Scale
1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine
1/2 cup brandy or dark rum
1/4 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed
1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
2 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
3 star anise
1 small orange, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
Optional: extra orange slices and cranberries for garnish
Instructions
Combine the red wine, brandy or rum, orange juice, and honey or maple syrup in a large saucepan or slow cooker.
Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise to the liquid.
Add the sliced orange and lemon to the pot.
Heat the mixture gently over low heat. Do not let it boil. You want it hot enough to serve warm, about 30 minutes on the stovetop or 1-2 hours on low in a slow cooker.
Taste the punch and add more sweetener if you prefer it sweeter.
Remove the whole spices and citrus slices before serving, or leave them in for presentation.
Ladle the warm punch into mugs. Garnish each serving with a fresh orange slice or a few cranberries.
Notes
For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the wine with grape juice or cranberry juice and increase the orange juice slightly.
You can prepare the spiced mixture ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. Reheat gently before serving.
If you are using a slow cooker, set it to the ‘low’ setting and let the flavors meld for a few hours.
