Salted Caramel Apple Pie

Whip up a delightful Salted Caramel Apple Pie that tastes like a hug from grandma. This recipe is perfect for a cozy afternoon treat, bringing that special Sunday feeling to any day of the week.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 recipe for your favorite pie crust (double crust)
  • 6 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples (about 6-7 medium apples)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 2 tablespoons coarse sugar, for sprinkling
  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of pie dough and line a 9-inch pie plate. Trim the edges, leaving about a 1/2-inch overhang.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and lemon juice.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust. Dot the top with the small pieces of butter.
  5. Drizzle the caramel sauce evenly over the apples.
  6. Roll out the second disc of pie dough. Place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal. Cut vents in the top crust.
  7. Brush the top crust with the egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes at 400°F (200°C).
  9. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for another 30-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, loosely tent it with foil.
  10. Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack for at least 2-3 hours before slicing and serving. This allows the filling to set properly.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, use a mix of apple varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Fuji.
  • If you don’t have caramel sauce, you can make a simple one by melting caramels with a little cream.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
