Ingredients
Scale
1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine
1 cup cranberry juice
1 cup pomegranate juice
1/4 cup orange liqueur (optional)
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
8 whole cloves
1 star anise
1 orange, sliced
Instructions
Combine the red wine, cranberry juice, pomegranate juice, orange liqueur (if using), and brown sugar in a large saucepan.
Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise to the saucepan.
Slice the orange and add the slices to the liquid.
Heat the mixture over medium-low heat until it is steaming hot, but do not let it boil. Boiling will cook off the alcohol.
Simmer gently for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Taste and add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter.
Serve warm in mugs, garnishing each serving with a fresh orange slice or a few extra spices.
Notes
You can substitute maple syrup for brown sugar for a different sweetness profile.
If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, substitute the red wine with extra cranberry and pomegranate juice or sparkling cider.
For an extra citrus note, add a few strips of orange peel along with the sliced orange.
