Mongolian Beef

Create a delicious restaurant-style Mongolian Beef at home! This recipe features tender beef slices coated in a savory, slightly sweet soy-garlic sauce, perfect for a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon chili garlic sauce (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sliced green onions
  • Cooked white or brown rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Toss to coat evenly and let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer (cook in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding) and sear until browned on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the beef broth, brown sugar, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, and chili garlic sauce (if using). Stir well to combine and bring the sauce to a simmer.
  5. Return the seared beef to the skillet. Toss to coat the beef in the sauce and cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until the sauce has slightly thickened and the beef is heated through.
  6. Stir in the sliced green onions.
  7. Serve immediately over cooked rice.

Notes

  • For the best texture, slice the beef very thinly against the grain. Partially freezing the beef for about 30 minutes before slicing can make this easier.
  • Adjust the sweetness and spiciness of the sauce to your preference by altering the amount of brown sugar and chili garlic sauce.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like sliced bell peppers or onions along with the garlic and ginger.
