Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs white fish fillets (like cod or tilapia)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup beer or club soda
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 8 small corn tortillas
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tsp lime zest
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Gradually add beer or club soda, whisking until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Cut fish into 1-inch pieces.
  4. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet over medium-high heat to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Dip fish pieces into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated.
  6. Carefully place battered fish into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  7. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Remove fish with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. Warm tortillas by wrapping them in a damp paper towel and microwaving for 30 seconds, or by lightly toasting them in a dry skillet.
  10. To make the lime crema, whisk together mayonnaise, lime juice, and lime zest. Season with salt and pepper.
  11. Assemble tacos by filling each tortilla with crispy fish, shredded cabbage, cilantro, and red onion.
  12. Drizzle with lime crema.

Notes

  • You can adjust the spice level by adding a pinch of cayenne pepper to the batter.
  • For a healthier option, bake the fish instead of frying.
  • Feel free to add other toppings like avocado, salsa, or jalapeños.
