Eggnog French Toast Bake with Nutmeg

Make your holiday mornings special with this Eggnog French Toast Bake. It is a simple, make-ahead casserole infused with the warm spices of eggnog and topped with fresh nutmeg. This recipe brings festive cheer right to your breakfast table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (about 1 pound) day-old French bread or brioche, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups eggnog (full-fat recommended)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (plus extra for topping)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter for greasing the dish

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the eggnog mixture slowly and evenly over the bread cubes. Press down gently to help the bread absorb the liquid.
  4. Cover the dish with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) before baking.
  6. Remove the plastic wrap. Sprinkle the top generously with extra ground nutmeg.
  7. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the French toast is puffed, golden brown, and cooked through in the center. A knife inserted near the center should come out mostly clean.
  8. Let it cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy the Sunday Flavor!

Notes

  • Using day-old bread gives you the best texture for soaking up the custard.
  • For a richer flavor, use high-quality eggnog.
  • You can prepare this completely the day before, making your morning simple.
  • Serve with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh berries if desired.
