A close-up of a pile of golden, flaky, twisted cheese straws recipe on a white plate.

Make these classic, crispy Southern Cheddar Cheese Straws from scratch. This easy recipe delivers buttery, cheesy, and flavorful straws perfect for any party or savory appetizer snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a little kick)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter until smooth.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and paprika.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  5. Add the freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese to the dough. Mix until the cheese is evenly incorporated. Do not overmix.
  6. Take small portions of the dough (about 1 tablespoon each) and roll them between your palms into thin ropes, about 4 to 5 inches long and 1/4 inch thick. You can twist them slightly for a classic look.
  7. Place the dough ropes onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 1 inch between each straw.
  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese straws are lightly golden brown and crisp. Baking time may vary based on your oven.
  9. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and let the cheese straws cool on the sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. They will crisp up as they cool.
  10. Serve these homemade cheese straws warm or at room temperature as a perfect party snack or savory appetizer.

Notes

  • Use freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese for the best flavor and texture; pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that affect the dough.
  • For a variation, try adding 1 teaspoon of finely chopped fresh rosemary to the dough mixture.
  • You can prepare the dough ahead of time, wrap it tightly, and chill it for up to 2 days before rolling and baking.
