Classic Mulled Wine Recipe

Warm up your holidays with this classic mulled wine recipe. It’s a delightful blend of red wine, spices, and citrus, perfect for festive gatherings. Chloe from Sunday Flavor shares her easy-to-make recipe for a comforting and aromatic drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine (like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cranberries (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Pour the red wine into a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced orange, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and brown sugar (or maple syrup) to the pot.
  3. If using, stir in the brandy.
  4. Gently heat the mixture for at least 15-20 minutes. Do not let it boil. You want to warm it through and allow the spices to infuse.
  5. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  6. Ladle the mulled wine into mugs, ensuring each serving has some of the spiced fruit.
  7. Garnish with fresh cranberries if desired.

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, use a good quality grape juice instead of wine and omit the brandy.
  • You can prepare the mulled wine ahead of time and gently reheat it before serving.
  • Experiment with different spices like cardamom pods or a slice of ginger for added flavor.
