Ingredients
Scale
6 cups sliced apples (about 6-7 medium), peeled, cored, and sliced
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1 recipe for double pie crust
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and salt. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
Line a 9-inch pie plate with one of the pie crusts. Pour the apple filling into the crust, distributing it evenly. Dot the top of the filling with the small pieces of butter.
Cover the pie with the second pie crust. Crimp the edges to seal. Cut several vents in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the crust starts to brown too quickly, you can loosely tent it with aluminum foil.
Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 2-3 hours before slicing and serving. This allows the filling to set properly.
Notes
For an extra rich crust, you can brush the top crust with an egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water) before baking.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a delightful treat.
You can use a mix of apple varieties for a more complex flavor. Granny Smith apples are great for their tartness and firm texture.
