Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups challah or brioche bread, cubed
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Arrange the bread cubes in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down to ensure it soaks up the custard.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the diced apples, melted butter, brown sugar, and pecans (if using). Stir to coat the apples.
  5. Scatter the apple mixture over the bread.
  6. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake the French toast bake for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up.
  9. Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For an extra rich flavor, use a combination of milk and half-and-half.
  • If you don’t have challah or brioche, French bread or even sturdy white bread can be used.
  • Serve with maple syrup, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
