Close-up of a freshly baked chocolate mug cake topped with melted chocolate chips.

Make a warm, single-serving chocolate cake in the microwave in under five minutes using basic pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 Tablespoons milk
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a standard microwave-safe mug (about 10-12 oz), whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until combined.
  2. Add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
  3. Mix well with a fork until the batter is smooth and no dry pockets remain. Do not overmix.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips, if using.
  5. Place the mug in the microwave. Cook on high power for 60 to 90 seconds. Cooking time varies based on microwave wattage. Start with 60 seconds and check for doneness. The cake should be set but still slightly moist on top.
  6. Let the cake cool in the mug for one minute before eating directly from the mug.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute the milk with coffee or use a dark cocoa powder.
  • If you prefer a gooey center, undercook the cake by about 10 seconds.
  • Serve with a scoop of ice cream or a dusting of powdered sugar.
