Amazing Blooming Onion In Oven: One Guilt-Free Snack Secret

Blooming Onion In Oven

This recipe offers a lighter, oven-baked version of the classic blooming onion. You get pull-apart petals without the deep-fried grease.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • For the dipping sauce:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the onion: Peel the onion and cut off about 1/2 inch from the top. Do not cut off the root end. Place the onion root-side up.
  3. Cut the onion: Make 12-16 cuts from the top of the onion down towards the root, stopping about 1/2 inch from the root. The cuts should be evenly spaced to create petals.
  4. Gently separate the petals: Carefully open the onion petals to loosen them.
  5. Whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper in a shallow bowl.
  6. In another shallow bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
  7. Dip the onion: First, dip the onion into the milk and egg mixture, making sure all petals are coated. Let any excess drip off.
  8. Next, dredge the onion in the flour mixture, ensuring all petals are well coated. Gently shake off any excess.
  9. Place the coated onion on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle the olive oil over the onion.
  10. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the onion is tender and golden brown. The petals should be slightly crispy.
  11. While the onion bakes, prepare the dipping sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.
  12. Serve the blooming onion immediately with the dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use a sharp knife for clean cuts on the onion.
  • Don’t cut through the root, it holds the petals together.
  • Adjust the cayenne pepper in the coating and sauce to your heat preference.
  • You can try different spices in the coating for flavor variations.
