A close-up of thick, bright green Avocado Crema with Lime and Cilantro swirled in a small white ramekin.

A simple recipe for a smooth, bright, and tangy avocado crema perfect for topping tacos, grilled meats, or salads.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1/2 cup water (or more for thinner consistency)
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro leaves, packed
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a food processor or high-speed blender.
  2. Add the water, lime juice, cilantro, garlic, salt, and pepper to the processor or blender.
  3. Blend the ingredients until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. Stop and scrape down the sides as needed.
  4. If the crema is too thick for your liking, add water, one tablespoon at a time, blending after each addition until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Taste the crema and adjust salt or lime juice if necessary.
  6. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free, richer crema, substitute 1/4 cup of the water with plain Greek yogurt or sour cream if you are not avoiding dairy.
  • If you prefer a milder cilantro flavor, use less cilantro and add a small amount of parsley.
  • This crema thickens slightly when chilled.
