Ingredients
Scale
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
½ cup warm milk
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 large egg, room temperature
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 large apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced
¼ cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
2-3 tablespoons milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
In a small bowl, combine yeast, warm milk, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, whisk together the remaining sugar, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
Add the foamy yeast mixture to the wet ingredients and stir.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and cinnamon.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
While the dough rises, prepare the filling. In a bowl, mix the diced apples with brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of softened butter, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle (about 12×18 inches) on a lightly floured surface.
Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border.
Tightly roll up the dough from the long side.
Cut the roll into 12 equal slices.
Place the slices in a greased baking dish, cut-side up.
Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon rolls.
Notes
Ensure your milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
For extra flavor, you can add chopped walnuts or pecans to the filling.
Adjust the amount of milk in the glaze to achieve your desired consistency.
